John Millington Morgan, age 86, died on August 17 at home in Golden, Colorado. He is survived by his sister Shirley Morgan, his daughter Sandra DeFelice, his granddaughter Noelle and his companion of 30 years, Karen Miles. He was preceded in death by his brothers Clifford and James.
John lived a life of professionalism and service. After serving in the Army, he graduated from Alfred University with a degree in ceramics engineering. He worked for GE and for Coors Ceramics, where he held positions in engineering and management. His search firm Morgan Management provided technical support to engineering companies seeking talented employees. He later worked as a consultant to several Colorado companies. More recently he helped establish and operate Karen's business, Materials and Processes Solutions, providing materials analysis and forensics support to manufacturing clients.
Outside of his professional life John served the community in multiple capacities. He ran for office as state representative, reportedly losing by the equivalent of one vote in each district. (Your vote matters – vote!) He sang in several local productions and church choirs. He served as regional coordinator of the AARP Driver Safety Program for the maximum allowed terms. Most recently he has worked with SCORE as a counselor to small businesses and as vice chair.
John never lost his sense of adventure. He took up downhill skiing at age 60 when cross country became too tame. He traveled to Mexico and began skin-diving, traveled to Hong Kong as a courier, and onward to Thailand, Singapore and Bali. He did extensive genealogy research, and when available records ended he traveled to Wales and found the house where his grandparents lived and the church where they were married.
Through medical challenges John was also an adventurer – he called it being a guinea pig, his oncologist called him a pioneer, defeating metastatic melanoma with the aid of the new immunotherapy drugs.
A celebration of John's life will be held at 10:00 August 24 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 901 South Sheridan Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado.
