John Franklin Morning, affectionately known as “Skookie,” passed away peacefully on the morning of July 13, 2025, in Denver, Colorado. He was 73 years old.

Born in Newport News, Virginia, on March 21, 1952, John was one of eleven children raised by his devoted mother, Mary Alice Morning. Though he grew up in Colorado, Virginia remained close to his heart—a place he loved to visit and might have returned to if not for the strong bond he shared with his daughter in Colorado.

John worked hard throughout his life, beginning with his first job shining shoes. He spent time at Coors and later retired from Ball Corporation. But beyond his career, John was a gifted man of many talents and passions. He was also a lifelong lover of music, playing the saxophone, clarinet, and flute. His children remember the joy of sitting outside his band practices, listening to the sounds that became the soundtrack of their youth.

Another great passion of John's was karate. In their younger years, he built a dojo in the basement, where he and his children practiced together, traveled to tournaments, and created some of their fondest memories. He was both a teacher and a teammate, encouraging, disciplined, and full of pride for every match and milestone.

John was also a deeply private man, one who carried complexities and quiet fears that shaped how he moved through the world. And yet, he never failed to show up with humor and heart. He was known for his jokes, his silly dances, and his attempts to make his daughter’s friends laugh. He kept things light when he could, even while carrying so much inside.

He is survived by his daughter, Janea Minaga; his ex-wife, Bonita Morning; his ex-wife, Steffiene Morning; his siblings; and many family members who knew the depth of his love, even when it wasn’t spoken aloud.

John “Skookie” Morning was a man of music, martial arts, metalwork, and mystery—a complicated soul who gave his best to those he loved. His family’s wish is that, in whatever comes next, he finds the peace and joy he long deserved. May he be surrounded by light, laughter, and the kind of love he once only dreamed of.

A private service will be held in his honor. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to share a story, a song, or a smile in memory of John.

"Dad, you gave me music, laughter, and lessons I didn’t understand until I grew into them. I will love you forever—and I hope you're finally at peace."
