Joseph “Joey” Elizalde was born December 23, 1940 to Angelo and Josephine Elizalde in Denver, Colorado. He grew up in North Denver with his sisters: Patricia -“Tishie”, Delores, Margaret -“Margie”, Josephine, Marianna -“Nana”, Ramona, and Colleen (the second Colleen), and his only brother, Eugene -“Gene”. His oldest sister, “the first” Colleen passed away before Joey was born.
Joey attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and Cathedral High School in Denver. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy where he served for 6 years. He was stationed on the aircraft carrier, USS Midway where he was an aviation machinist. He also served in Japan and finally at the Alameda Naval Air Station. He was honorably discharged in 1965 and worked for three years in the Naval Reserves. After he completed his time with the Naval Reserves, he returned home to Denver where he worked as a welder for many years and an airplane mechanic. After leaving those jobs, he went to work for the City and County of Denver as well at RTD. While working as a welder, he attended many welding competitions. His hobbies included model airplanes and ships, and the history of World War II. He loved football and was a lifelong Denver Broncos fan.
Throughout his life he attended Mass. He was called home to be with his Saviour on October 22, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: “the first” Colleen, Tishie, Delores, Margie, Josephine, and Nana. He is survived by his sister Ramona (Pat Herrera), his brother Gene (Kari), and his baby sister “the second” Colleen, and by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
The family of Joseph Angelo Elizalde Jr. wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered their support during this profoundly difficult time. Your kindness and compassion have been a source of comfort to them.
