Josie Acosta, age 86, of Denver, Colorado passed away December 24, 2016.
She was born in Pueblo, Colorado on May 11, 1930. She moved with her family to Denver when she was 5 years old. She attended schools in West Denver and was a life-long resident of West Denver. She was married to Felix Acosta for 43 years.
Josie was an activist in El Movimiento and was passionate about improving the lives of all West Denver residents. She was a founding member of the Crusade for Justice and picketed for the United Farm Workers. Josie was a member of the Latino Advisory Council under Mayor Wellington Webb. She was also an active member of the Denver Inner City Parish, Senior Program. She was honored with many awards for her community activism including being named La Reyna of the Cinco de Mayo festival 2 years in a row. Her greatest honor was the Josie Acosta Senior Wing Addition at La Alma Recreation Center located at 11th & Mariposa.
Josie is survived by three children: Jacqueline Acosta of Thornton; Pamela Acosta Sandoval of Denver; and Felix Acosta Jr. of Denver. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Victor Acosta, daughter Melanie Acosta and her husband Felix Acosta.

A visitation will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, January 5th from 5:00pm until 8:00pm with a Rosary at 7:00pm.
Mass will be held on Friday January 6th at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 600 Galapago St., Denver.
Reception immediately following the Mass will be held at the Josie Acosta Senior Wing of La Alma Recreation Center located at 1325 W 11th Ave, Denver.
