Julian S. Frederick

July 10, 1930 — April 22, 2015

Julian Frederick was born on July 10, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY to Sidney Schwed and Lillian Jesajas. He was educated in NY, married, and in the 50s moved to California, which he saw as the great hopeful, sunny, and progressive frontier of the United States. Together with his wife Rosalie, they built a mid-century ranch in Los Gatos. Julian was deeply involved in the civil rights movement of the 60s. He taught social studies at Willow Glen High School in San Jose and finally retired later in life to Alameda, California. In the earlier days in Alameda, dad held substitute teacher positions at various elementary schools and was liked by the children. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening on his porch, spending time with his friend Carol, caring for various cats and birds, and attending baseball games. He was also a voracious reader. As increasing dementia took a toll on his cognitive abilities, his son Todd moved him to Denver in order to be closer and assure his health and safety. Dad lived at Marycrest Assisted Living, The Argyle, and Bethany Rehabilitation. Much appreciation is given for the many caregivers who offered loving assistance at these facilities. Son Todd is grateful for the care offered at Collier Hospice during Julian's final hours. Julian is survived by children Jesse, Todd, and April; brother Ira and wife Sandy, as well as other extended family.
