Kenneth Bradford

January 30, 1927 — February 28, 2016

BRADFORD, KENNETH D.

Kenneth Davidson Bradford was born January 30, 1927, in Galveston, Texas, and passed away February 28, 2016, in Littleton.

He moved to Colorado as a child and began a lifelong love affair with the mountains. He met Cecelia Barton, the young woman who would be his wife, at bustling Camp Hale, Colo., near Leadville, while the country was readying for World War II. In 1944 he enlisted in the Marine Corps, and served in the Pacific during the war. Ken was called to active duty a second time for the Korean War, but not before marrying Cece in 1951. Ken and Cece celebrated 59 years together before Cece's passing in 2010.

An avid outdoorsman, Ken enjoyed climbing Colorado's high peaks, trout fishing in remote places, and exploring mining ghost towns deep in the central Rockies. He became a volunteer ski patrolman, and later served as the Director of the Rocky Mountain Division of the National Ski Patrol System. In addition to a career in the brick manufacturing business, Ken served as a board member for more than two decades on the Platte Canyon Water & Sanitation and Southwest Metro Water Districts.

Ken and Cece spent their first summer of retirement backpacking through the mountains along the 500-mile Colorado Trail. Ken continued to enjoy skiing and hiking into his mid-80s, often giving tips about snow or trail conditions to fellow skiers and climbers. He is survived by three daughters, four grandsons, and three great-grand children. A private celebration of his life will be held March 13 in Denver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project, http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
