Kenneth G. Nelson, 87, of Aurora, Colorado passed away October 25, 2015.
He was born November 26, 1927 in Luverne, Minnesota, the son of George and Lulu (Gertz) Nelson. Ken was a graduate of Luverne High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison School of Banking. During WWII Ken served in the United States Army. He was stationed at Percy Jones General Hospital, Battle Creek, Michigan, with the Army Medical Corp. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1947. On November 19, 1950 he married the girl next door, Shirley Wiese. Shirley and Ken were known as the "Nomadic" Nelsons; living and raising their family in three different towns in Minnesota, one town in Nebraska, one in South Dakota, and two in Iowa before settling down in beautiful Aurora, Colorado.
Ken is survived by his children; Kristine (Annie) Nelson, Bradley (Robin) Nelson, Brett (Pam) Nelson, and Sara (Bob Leonard) Nelson; seven grandchildren, Samantha (Sean) Duggan, Joseph Nelson, Meghann (Tyler Allen) Reini, Zachary (Natalie Jencks) Reini, Ashley Nelson, Kyle (Crissy)Reini, Paige Nelson; two great-grandchildren, Connor Duggan and Graham Allen; sister-in-law, Marge Nelson. Ken is also survived by many other family members and friends, whom he spoke of lovingly. Ken considered his friends immediate family. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Nelson; parents, George & Lulu Nelson; and brother, Darwin George Nelson.
Ken was very active in his former church, Aurora First Presbyterian and most recently at the Heather Gardens Chapel. Ken volunteered at the Heather Gardens Community Center. He loved dominos on Saturday mornings and his Wednesday morning Round Table Discussions where they solved all the problems of the world. Ken was known for his easy going attitude and contagious smile. He never met a stranger.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Heather Gardens Foundation or The National Shingles Foundations. Ken's Celebration of Life Service will be on Thursday, November 19 at 5:00 pm in the Heather Gardens Community Center. There will also be a Celebration of Life and burial in Luverne, MN in the summer of 2016.
