Leona LaVonne (Hartsook) Shaw, born 10 December 1919 to William Hartsook and Mabel (Olmstead) Hartsook in Seibert, CO.
She was the youngest of 3 girls (Crystal and Francis), and senior only to her youngest of three brothers (Earl, Irvin and Darold), all passed.
She lived in Vona, CO, until moving to Burlington, CO in 1935. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1937. While there, she was Captain of the Women's Basketball Team, and won the Colorado State Championship two years in a row.
During school, she also worked with her brothers and sisters at her parent's Burlington restaurant, Bill's Café.
With financial help from her brothers and sisters, she moved to Denver and attended the Emily Griffith / Denver Opportunity Beauty School.
She married Richard E (Dick) Shaw on 25 September 1940 in Colby Kansas, and worked in the Denver area until his induction into the US Army. Her and her mother followed Dick throughout the western US, living in Arizona and California, until such time he was shipped overseas (Guadalcanal and Philippine Islands). While he was stationed in Cebu City readying for the invasion [of Japan], Leona was celebrated by many soldiers as the "Pin-Up Girl of Cebu."
She owned several beauty salons in the Metro Denver area (including The France Leone Downtown, Beauty Time in Lakewood, and lastly The Treasure House of Beauty in Golden), until her retirement in 1983.
She was not a stranger to celebrity, as she briefly dated Denver Pyle (who grew up in nearby Bethune, CO), did Doris Day's hair when she sang with Les Brown and his Band of Renown, and even was a background actor (extra) in the movie Every Which Way But Loose, with Clint Eastwood (Zanzibar music and fight scenes).
A loving wife to her husband Dick (passed in 1988), nurturing mother and best friend to daughter Candy and son Richard, caring grandmother of granddaughters Shawn-Dee and Brandee, and proud-beyond-words great-grandmother (G-G) to precious great-granddaughter Leigha.
She lived life to the fullest every day, and will be greatly missed by all.
