Leona Mae Hansen, 91, of Aurora, passed away Sunday, August 31, 2014.
Leona was born to the late Ernest and Gladys Mathews in Leesburg Florida on March 4, 1923. On January 1, 1950 she married her sweetheart, William C Hansen, "Chris". They started their family in Salt Lake City, Utah before relocating to Aurora, Colorado in 1961.
Leona prioritized loving and guiding her children and grandchildren as she prepared healthy meals and sought opportunities for her children to excel. She was also a second mother to the many children she cared for in her home or at church. Her garden was also very important to her as she cultivated roses and pansies. As an entrepreneur, she tried marketing a number of different products, primarily enjoying the interactions with customers who became her friends. One of Leona's favorite activities was traveling in the family car or van with Chris at the wheel driving across country to visit the extended family.
Leona was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Aurora. Her belief in Jesus Christ as her Saviour was a message she treasured and shared with anyone who would listen, even telephone solicitors.
Leona is survived by her husband, William C Hansen, and her six children (with respective spouse): Brenda Arnold of Greenville, SC ; Lynnette Kennison of Jacksonville, FL (Daniel Gutshall); Dwane Hansen of Denver, CO (Amy Hansen); Diann Brosius of Littleton, CO (Eric Brosius); Halmar Hansen of Parker, CO (Linda Hansen); and Dale Hansen of Cridersville, OH.
Leona is also survived by fourteen grandchildren: David (Michelle Arnold) and Ruth Ann Arnold; Matthew, Justin, Joel and Jordan Kennison; Corey (Jen Gutshall) and Kate Gutshall; Christopher Hansen; Michelle and Ryan Brosius; Laura Hansen; and Molly and Sarah Hansen. She is also a great grandmother to seven great-grandchildren Darian, Abigayle, Brenden, Kayleigh, and Evan Arnold; and Maxwell and Alexander Gutshall. Her three brothers, Hebert, Irving, and Carl Mathews will miss their "big sister" who was definitely the center of family communication.
She is preceded in death by her beloved sisters: Margaret Eaton and Helen Cray.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made out to Make A Wish Foundation or Samaritan Purse.
Services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 190 Potomac St., Aurora on Tuesday September 23, at 3:30pm.
