Lucille Mazurek

Lucille Helen Mazurek of Aurora, CO passed away on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at the Joy of Caring Assisted Living Home in Denver, CO after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's.

She was born October 10, 1923, in a farmhouse built by her parents William and Clara Berndt in Red Willow County, Nebraska. She attended Elementary School in McCook, Nebraska and High School in Brush, Colorado. She was a lifetime member of the Assemblies of God. As a teenager she sensed a distinct call from God for foreign missionary service. In 1947 she enrolled at North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN where she met her future husband, John Mazurek, a recently discharged World War II veteran, from Cambridge, MA. Lucille and John were married June 7, 1950 in McCook, and lived in Wilmington, DE, Maquoketa, IA and Benkelman, NE, pastoring local Assembly of God churches. Two sons were born during that time, Robert and James.

In 1961 Lucille and John were appointed foreign missionaries with the Assemblies of God. After one year of language study in Costa Rica they spent thirty-four years in service in Chile, South America, where they planted numerous churches, directed the national Bible College in Santiago and organized summer camps for children, youth and adults. Lucille served many years as National Sunday School Director and National Women's Ministries Director of the Assemblies of God of Chile. When their two sons left home for college in the US, John and Lucille found a way to fill their empty nest. They moved to northern Chile to start a church in La Serena. That work stood out because of the multitude of troubled youth they reached for Christ. These teenagers lovingly renamed them Tio Juan and Tia Lucy (Uncle John and Aunt Lucy). Lucille and John are still fondly remembered by thousands of Chilean Christians, not as Reverend or Pastor, but as aunt and uncle.

In 1996 Lucille and John retired from foreign missionary service, and bought their very first own home in Colorado Springs, CO. To do this, John finally cashed in long overdue benefits from his combat service in World War II. Even in retirement, they continued to serve the Lord as interim pastors at Bethel Assembly of God in Burlington, CO.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, William & Clara Berndt, her brother Harold (Ruth) Berndt, her husband John and her son, Robert. She is survived by one sister, Eleanor, one brother, Glen (Norma) Berndt, one son, James, two daughters-in-law, Gail and Ester Mazurek, numerous nieces and nephews, grandchildren, John, Jessica, Koreen, James and Jamie Mazurek, and great-grandchildren, Christopher, Katie and Michelle Alvarado

Lucila Helen Berndt de Mazurek de Aurora, Colorado, falleció el día martes, 27 de octubre, 2015, en el Hogar Joy of Caring en Denver, Colorado, luego de lidiar valientemente contra el Alzheimers.

Nació el día 10 de octubre, 1923, en una casa campestre construida por sus padres William y Clara Berndt, ubicada en el condado Red Willow, Nebraska. Asistió a la escuela básica en McCook, Nebraska y a la secundaria en Brush, Colorado. Fue miembro de las Asambleas de Dios toda su vida. Como adolescente sintió un llamado de Dios para la obra misionera. En 1947 se matriculó en el Instituto Bíblico North Central en Minneapolis, Minnesota, donde conoció a su futuro esposo, Juan Mazurek, un veterano de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, oriundo de Cambridge, Massachusetts. Lucila y Juan se casaron el 7 de junio, 1950 en McCook, y luego vivieron en Wilmington, Delaware, Maquoketa, Iowa y Benkelman, Nebraska donde pastorearon iglesias locales de las Asambleas de Dios. Dos hijos, Roberto y Jaime, nacieron en aquel tiempo.

En 1961, Lucila y Juan fueron nombrados misioneros foráneos de las Asambleas de Dios. Luego de un año de estudio del español en Costa Rica, sirvieron por treinta y cinco años en Chile, Sud América, donde plantaron numerosas iglesias, dirigieron el Instituto Bíblico nacional en Santiago, y organizaron campamentos de verano para niños, jóvenes y adultos. Durante varios años Lucila fue directora nacional de las Escuelas Dominicales y de los Ministerios Femeninos de las Asambleas de Dios de Chile. Cuando sus dos hijos dejaron la casa para estudiar en EEUU, Juan y Lucila encontraron como llenar su nido vacío. Se mudaron al norte de Chile para comenzar una iglesia en La Serena. Esa obra se destacó por causa de la multitud de jóvenes que alcanzaron para Cristo. Estos amorosamente los renombraron, Tío Juan y Tía Lucy. Miles de cristianos chilenos aún recuerdan a Lucila y Juan, no como reverendos o pastores, sino como Tía y Tío.

En 1996, Lucila y Juan se jubilaron de su labor misionera, y compraron su primera casa propia en Colorado Springs, Colorado. Para lograr esto, Juan por fin cobró sus beneficios debidos en virtud de su servicio en combate durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Aun en su jubilación, continuaron sirviendo al Señor como pastores interinos en la Asamblea de Dios Betél, en Burlington, Colorado.

Lucila fue precedida en muerte por sus padres, William y Clara Berndt, su hermano Haroldo (Rut) Berndt, su esposo Juan y su hijo mayor, Roberto. Con vida permanecen una hermana, Eleanor, un hermano, Glen (Norma) Berndt, un hijo, James, dos nueras, Ester y Gail Mazurek, varios sobrios y sobrinas, sus nietos John, Jessica, Koreen, James y Jamie Mazurek, y bisnietos Christopher, Katie y Michelle Alvarado.
