Listen to Obituary

There are no words to express the sadness we feel in sharing the loss of our beloved, Luis Mares. He passed away in his home on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 90 years old. We will forever be grateful for the time and memories that we shared, it is an understatement to say he will be greatly missed.

Luis was born in Denver, Colorado on September 24, 1936 to late parents, Mary Abeytia and Magin Mares. In addition to being the patriarch of the family, Luis was a remarkable father, grandfather, brother, husband, uncle, cousin, and friend.

He proudly served our country as a soldier in the United States Army and spent many years managing at Burlington Northern Railroad (BNSF Railway). He was a foodie, had a deep appreciation for music, loved to travel, was exceptionally present in his grandchildrens’ lives, strived to be active, and enjoyed supporting the Colorado sports teams.

He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Angelina Mares, with whom he shared many loving years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his oldest son, Jim Mares. Luis is survived by two sons, Greg Mares and Bob Mares; eight grandchildren, Samantha Hernandez, Shawn Mares, Angie Good, Jimme Mares, Megan Wach, Evan Mares, Emma Mares, and Olivia Mares; five great-grandchildren, Xavier, Hailey, DJ, Maverick, and Alexander; and numerous nieces and nephews.

May Luis be remembered for how he upheld a strong sense of gathering, how much he loved his family, the humor he shared with everyone he encountered, and being the textbook definition of a devoted grandparent. A lifetime with someone you love will never feel long enough but may you remain in our hearts until we meet again someday.
