Margaret E. Martisek was born on June 24, 1931. When she was 13 years old, Margaret's mother, Helen, died from an infection she developed from a splinter. Margaret later graduated from Bloom Township High School in 1949 and with a degree from Little Company of Mary School of Nursing in August, 1954.
She became engaged to Norbert Slavik. The two of them decided to get married only after they had earned enough money to pay for their own wedding and to purchase their first house. On November 16, 1956, the couple was married at St. Paul's Catholic Church.
Norbert worked in the shipping department of Amsco Steel, and Margaret as a registered nurse at Saint James Hospital in Chicago Heights. She gave birth to Robert in 1960, and Thomas in 1962. When Norbert's company transferred the family to Denver, it was Margaret who chose their new home in the Bear Valley neighborhood, where she would live for the next 47 years. Her daughter, Laura, was born in 1969.
Margaret loved Colorado, and spent much of her free time in the coming years exploring the state. The family planned at least one big camping trip a year. She worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver, and spent her free time gardening, teaching crochet, clipping recipes, and keeping up-to-date with health issues.
Upon retirement, Margaret and Norbert decided to travel around the world. She also took up tennis, stopping only after she developed a knee problem.
Always active, Margaret and Norbert played pickle ball and worked out at Barnum Recreation Center. Later, Margaret attended senior aerobics at the local YMCA. She was also a devoted member of Notre Dame Catholic Church.
In January 2014, Margaret was diagnosed as having Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She lost the battle with the disease on July 23, 2014, at 83 years old. She is survived by her sisters Ann Martisek and Helen Jelinek, her children Robert Slavik, Thomas Slavik and Laura Fortin, and two grandchildren, Matthew and Nathan Fortin.
Services will be held on Friday, August 1, 2014, at 11:15 a.m. Fort Logan National Cemetery, Area C. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be sent to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, www.lls.org .
