Obituary

Margie Colarelli

Margie Aileen Colarelli (née Ferguson), 92, of Arvada, Colorado passed away peacefully on November 19, 2016. Margie was born in Oelwein Iowa, and grew up on a farm. She graduated from Reinbeck High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Following college, she worked as a teacher in a rural school near Reinbeck, Iowa. She also worked for the John Deere company in Waterloo. In 1945 she moved to Colorado. There she worked for the May Company and the Daily Journal as a writer and editor until 1947. She then worked for the Department of the Interior until 1951. She stayed home for the next twenty years to raise her children. After her children were grown, she returned to work in 1972 and worked for the Department of the Army and the Social Security administration until she retired in 1985.

Margie had the gift of friendship. She had many friends over her lifetime. Almost all were life-long friends—neighbors, fellow church members, and old friends who she met when she first moved to Denver in the 1940s.

She loved adventure. Margie moved to Colorado to ski and enjoy the beauty of Colorado's mountains. She was a member of the Colorado Mountain Club and spent many weekends skiing and hiking in Colorado until she got married and had two children. After she retired, she set off on more adventures—traveling to scenic areas throughout the US and throughout the world (Italy, Portugal, Israel, Jordan, Australia, New Zealand).

Margie loved Colorado. She always loved trips to the mountains and was life-long booster of Colorado. She was loyal a fan of the Colorado Rockies and the Denver Broncos. She lived in her home in Arvada from 1956 until 2014, when she moved a few miles away to the Colorado Lutheran Home. She could have lived anywhere, but would have never thought of leaving Colorado.

Charitable work was a big part of her life. For many years Margie was a member of Project Linus, meeting with her group to knit and quilt blankets for children who were seriously ill. She was a long-time member of Christ the King Episcopal Church. She joined Christ the King in Arvada soon after it was established in 1956. She was a member of the Alter Guild for many years.

Margie had many interests. She collected Mickey Mouse memorabilia for many years; her house was a treasure trove. She enjoyed quilting and cooking, and she was an avid and excellent bridge player.

Margie was the youngest daughter of Hilda and Leslie Ferguson. She had two sisters, Imogene and Winona. She was married to Michael Colarelli (1947 to 1976) and has two sons, Stephen Michael (a college professor residing in Midland, MI) and Dennis James (a computer scientist residing in Boulder, CO). She has two granddaughters, Julia (a pastry chef residing in Chicago, IL) and Catherine (deceased).

Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Episcopal church (6490 Carr St., Arvada) at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 28, 2016. The service will be followed by a lunch at noon and internment at Arvada Cemetery at 1:30. Visitation hours are from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to: Project Linus (https://www.projectlinus.org/donations/) or The Fostering Hope Foundation (http://www.fosteringhopefoundation.org/).
