Marilyn rose Davey was born at approximately 8:00 pm on May 23, 1952.
Marilyn spent the first 6 years of her life in Welby, Colorado growing up on a truck farm growing vegetables. That came to an end when I-25 was built right through the heart of their farm. She moved to Wheat Ridge in 1958. Her father became a coal miner and her mother worked in school lunch rooms to be able to afford sending her through Catholic schools. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul Elementary School and then went to Holy Family High School. All the while, she took piano and music lessons. When it was time to select a college, she decided to attend St. Mary college in Leavenworth, KS. She met the love her life at a school dance on October 17, 1970. Four years later, they married on October 19, 1974.
In her junior and senior years, she also attended classes at the Archdiocese of Kansas City Office Liturgy and Sacramental Life. She also served as the Chairperson of the college liturgy team and led the music at weekend liturgies.
Upon graduation in 1974, she returned to Denver. She had two children together with Rick. Jim was born January 10, 1977 and Kris was born June 5, 1981.
Marilyn pursued her vocation passionately. She worked as Liturgist and Music Director at various parishes including Sts. Peter and Paul, Holy Family, Most Precious Blood, Christ the King in Evergreen, Spirit of Christ and finally St. Joseph Parish in Golden. She set up concerts/workshops that included Joe Mattingly and The Newman Singers, Marty Haugen, Bobby Fisher, Donna Pena, Jeanne Cotter and yes, even David Haas. Through her interactions with Bobby Fisher, they became close friends. Bobby wrote a song “This Is The Day” and dedicated it to Marilyn.
She was also founding member of a national convocation of a small Christian community that titled itself “Buena Vista”, because that is where they first met. Through Buena Vista, Marilyn directed the liturgies and music in several leadership conferences in St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle and in Washington D.C.
While at St. Joseph’s, Marilyn formed a music group known as “Maranatha.” At it’s height, the group included a flute, an oboe, a guitar, Marilyn on keyboard, a marimba and 6 vocalists. Through her contacts with Buena Vista, part of that group was contracted to record four tapes for the Archdiocese of Hartford to accompany their “Quest” series for small Christian communities. She retired in 1997 due to health problems.
Her love of art never dwindled. She loved leather work, jewelry making, glass etching and pottery. From 1998-2001, Marilyn was listed as the artist in residence at Red Rocks Community College Pottery Department.
Her other interests were square dancing, round dancing, nature hikes and fishing and just relaxing and playing games with the family.
In 2008, Marilyn and Rick visited Church of the Beloved and knew right away that this is where they belonged. Marilyn jumped right in and became part of the music ministry, on the liturgy team and took responsibility for the liturgical environment. In 2023, a series of medical problems began that kept her from continuing with her ministry.
Marilyn had a love of God, a love of music and a love of liturgy. She is with God now and is whole again and probably doing what she loved.
Her Celebration of Life service will be at Church of the Beloved on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 5:00 pm.
No flowers, please.
