Mark Mehalko

Our leader, our colleague, and our friend - Mark Mehalko, President, Move Colorado, passed away Sunday evening. He was widely loved, respected and appreciated for his leadership, his insight and his warmth – he supported and encouraged us, and he let his passion and good humor motivate us and move us forward. We are all honored to have worked with him and known him. We extend our sympathy, our love and prayers to his family.

Mark recently joined LS Gallegos and Associates, after holding long term senior executive management positions with AECOM and URS Consultants. He was a strategic thinker and manager who infused others with passion, enthusiasm and purpose. He began his career as a professional engineer with the Colorado Department of Highways in 1979 and then President of a construction firm for road and bridge contracting. His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Colorado (BSCE and MPA), and he was a dedicated Buff's fan and accomplished golfer. Mark was known for his strategic thinking, his understanding of innovative and traditional financing, and his ability to get things moving and get things done - the full package. During his 30 career, he worked on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon, E-470 Tollway, I-76 in Denver, US 550/US 160 in Durango, US 24 in Colorado Springs, Powers Boulevard EA, US 119 into Blackhawk, US 50 from Pueblo to Kansas to name a few.

And in 2007 and 2008 he served on Colorado Governor Ritter's Transportation Implementation and Finance Panel. He met with communities across the state helping to develop a transportation vision for Colorado, and then advocated legislation to make that vision happen - P3's, RTA's, federal funding and increased state investments in order to maintain and improve our transportation system. In 2009 I was elected President by the members of Move Colorado, a statewide organization charged with developing and advocating for sustainable funding of multi-modal solutions throughout the state of Colorado. He brought the national discussion on VMT to Colorado in 2011, helped lead the re-authorization of the ¼ cent sales tax for transportation in Douglas County in 2008, was actively engaged in the development and passage of RTA in El Paso County, and worked hard to support the passage of SB 108 in 2009 – creating new revenue and new tools to financing transportation in Colorado. He was active in all of the professional organizations, and was most proud of his involvement in WTS Colorado.
