MARK WAYNE PUUMALA JULY 29, 1955 -- MAY 6, 2012
Mark Wayne Puumala, 56, died May 6, 2012 at home in Lakewood, Colorado after a long battle with myelofibrosis.
Mark was born July 29, 1955 in Duluth, Minnesota. He was the second son of Dr. Reino H. Puumala and Dr. Marie Katherine Bepko of Cloquet, MN. He graduated from Cloquet High School in 1973 and the Duluth Vocational Institute in 1976.
After moving to Colorado in 1990, Mark was employed in automotive repair a skilled auto mechanic. Mark enjoyed hunting, and fishing with his many friends.
His skills at the BBQ grill were much admired. He is fondly remembered for his honesty, fairness, kindness, upbeat attitude, perseverance, and automotive expertise. He was generous with his time and talents with auto repair and shared his knowledge at work and home with friends. He took special enjoyment in playing pool and in 1985 qualified for and competed in the National Championships of the Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool in Las Vegas.
In September 2008 Mark was recognized by the City of Lakewood and the West Metro Fire Protection District for his heroic actions rescuing a 6 year old child who was stuck by her neck in a car window, and then provided life saving measures. "The little girl is alive and well, suffering no long term or serious injuries, your quick calm and efficient manner of reacting to this emergency undoubtedly saved the child's life and prevented a tragedy."
Mark was predeceased by his parents Dr. Reino H. Puumala and Dr. Marie K. Bepko of Cloquet, MN and his sister Kathleen Marie Gawboy of Ely, MN. Mark is survived by sisters Dierre Puumala of Grand Lake, CO and Nancy Luomala of Ann Arbor, MI; brothers Dr. Ricard (Dr. Barbara) Puumala of Cloquet, MN and Dale (Ann Marie) Puumala of Mtn. View, CA.
Mark is remembered by his many friends, by nieces Michelle Blesener (Greely, CO), Dr. Victoria Heren (Cloquet), Rev. Laura Berdahl (Duluth), Katya Whiterabbit (Madison, WI), Jael Luomala (Barnet, VT), Linden Gawboy (Minneapolis); and nephews Dr. Michael (Jennifer) Puumala and Matthew (Susan) Puumala (of Sioux Falls, SD), Galen Gawboy (Lexington, MA), James T. Gawboy (Soudan, MN) and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.
A celebration of Mark Puumala's life will be held Tuesday, June 12 at the River Inn Cloquet, Minnesota from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
