Marquita C. Gonzales, 86
In loving memory of Marquita C. Gonzales who passed away peacefully Jan. 20, 2014 at her home in Denver, Colorado.
Marquita was born Sept. 6, 1927 in Denver to Salvadore and Ida Castanon. She was the first of five children. She married Toby Gonzales on August 26, 1946 when she was 19 years old. They had 9 children. She lived in Colorado most of her life, moving to California and then returning to her native home in Denver.
A mother and homemaker, Marquita was the foundation of her family. She raised 9 children, instilling in them work ethic, morals, values and respect. She was a strong Catholic with an unwavering faith in God, praying the rosary for everyone in need. Throughout her life she kept a book where she recorded family births. She collected pictures of her kids, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She faithfully mailed birthday cards and Christmas cards every year. No matter what, the family knew they were coming. She enjoyed reading, playing bingo, watching her novellas, dancing and listening to Mexican music. Her favorite song was "Un Puno de Tierra", "One Scoop of Dirt". In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her family, attending birthdays, holiday gatherings and making short trips to Blackhawk. She was looking forward to attending her granddaughter's wedding this Spring.
In 2005, Colorado Governor Bill Owens proclaimed September 6th "Marquita Charlotte Gonzales Day" in the state of Colorado.
Marquita is survived by her brother Robert Castanon and two sisters, Dolores Alfonzo and Sylvia Lorraine Rodriguez. She had 14 nieces and nephews.
