Mary Ann Liberty 1929- 2015

Mary Ann Liberty, age 85, in the presence of her eldest daughter Suzanne Woodward, peacefully passed from this world to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday February 12, 2015 at Manor Care Denver on South Monaco Parkway.

Mary Ann was born on May 23rd, 1929 on a farm outside of Lakefield, Minnesota to her parents Leonhard Arthur August Kolander and Anna Kolander (nee Baumann) whom she loved deeply and fondly remembered throughout her adult life. Her memories of farm life included bringing her father his lunch when he was working out in the fields, doing various chores around the farm, and spending time with the many cats, dogs, and other farm animals that were also an integral part of their enterprise. She attended parochial school at St Peter's Lutheran School until 8th grade and continued on to graduate from Lakefield High School in 1947.

Following in her father's footsteps, Mary Ann pursued teaching credentials at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, and Concordia Teacher's College in Seward, NE and began a teaching career in Milwaukee, WI shortly thereafter. She loved children and continued to teach intermittently in private and Christian day schools while raising a family and moving to such varied places as St. Paul, MN, Northridge, CA , St. Petersburg, FL, and Boulder, Colorado. She also ran a breakfast diner at the Thunderbird Motel in Treasure Island , FL, with the ocean waves crashing on white sandy beaches just a few hundred yards away, and seagulls looking for free handouts!

While living in Boulder, Mary Ann operated a small convenience shop inside of the tallest downtown office building of the time, the Colorado Building. Visitors to the building were greeted by her cheerful disposition as they stopped for coffee, newspapers, snack food, and some friendly conversation.
After closing her shop in 1994, Mary Ann continued to work part time as a caregiver for two of her elderly friends, but she still found time to travel around the country to visit her 4 grandchildren and to visit with her friends at Golden West Senior Living in Boulder. Moreover, she thoroughly enjoyed all the nuances of her "birds eye" view of the Colorado Front Range as seen from her 10th floor apartment, as did her many visitors.

Mary Ann is survived by her daughter and son- in law, Michael & Suzanne Woodward, of Denver, Colorado, and their 4 children Steven, Charles, Anna, & William, and another daughter & son- in-law, Paul & Mary Techau, of Falls Church, VA, and her son, Glen Liberty, of Boise, ID. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Murrell and Vernice Ward of Lakefield, MN, by her sister Darline Lewis of Edina, MN, by her brother Leonard Kolander of Slater, IA, and by many admirable nephews, nieces, and cousins in Minnesota and the throughout the Midwest.

We all loved Mary Ann and look forward to a glorious reuniting with her in heaven. Mary Ann was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and a memorial service will be held in her honor at Mt Zion Lutheran Church, located at 1680 Balsam Ave, Boulder ,CO 80304 on Saturday, March 14th at 11 am with a lunch reception following.
