Listen to Obituary

On July 31st 1942, a beautiful, bouncing baby girl, Mary Margaret, was born to Dorris King Powell and Lonnie Powell Jr ., in Dyersburg, Tennessee. Mary Margaret Powell grew up in rural Dyer County, surrounded by a very loving family and loving Community.

She was baptized at an early age in Hopewell Presbyterian Church, where she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She attended Dobbins Grove Elementary School, and later attended Bruce High School where she was a member of the Cheerleading squad and participated in school choir.

Mary graduated from Bruce High School in 1960 and shortly afterwards relocated to Denver, Colorado, where she married her high school sweetheart, Charles Gary, Sr. in May, 1962. Three children were born to this union, Sherri Lin, Sharron Marie, and Charles F. Gary, Jr.

Mary stayed home for a few years, lovingly raising her children, and later began a career at Corporate Express in 1978, where she enjoyed many years in customer service. She retired in 2006, very eager to spend more time with her family (especially her granddaughters!), extended family, and her many friends, especially Eva Thron! Mary & Eva belonged to a tight-knit group of ladies lovingly called “Our Gang”. They had a lot of fun getting together at restaurants, going to movie theaters, celebrating birthdays and other special events, hosting potlucks for any occasion, and just enjoying the close friendship they had formed over the years.

Mary was an extraordinary human being, truly one of a kind, with her generosity, loving nature, and kindness! She never met a stranger, with her beautiful loving smile you were a friend to her always! She was a beautiful person and lived a beautiful life. Her family and friends were the center of her world.

After several years of declining health, Mary left us on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at HCA Aurora Hospital. Her family and friends were at her side. We are all truly overwhelmed by her loss, as she left a profound impact on everyone.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Bainy” Gary Sr, her parents, Lonnie and Dorris Powell; her brother, Lonnie Powell III, and her sister, Bertha Lee. She leaves to cherish her memories her daughters, Sherri, and Sharron, her son, Charles, Jr., all of Aurora, Colorado; three grandchildren: Brianna (Jonathan) Rodriguez, of Lafayette, Co, Kailey Gary, of Washington, DC, and Zoelle Gary, of Broomfield, Co; four sisters: Doris Burns, of Denver, Co, Carolyn (William) Norwood of Denver, Co, Trena Marsal, of Aurora, Co, and Kimberly (Charles) Somerville, Millington, TN; two brothers: Milton (Vickie) Powell, Dyersburg, TN, and Jimmy Whiteside, of Omaha, NE; her stepmother, Birdie Powell, of Aurora, Co; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends!

Her presence will be missed from our eyes, but Mary will live forever in our hearts 💞

We deeply appreciate the wonderful outpouring of love and support from everyone who loved her. Thank you! Thank God!
