Matthew Roberto Torres, affectionately known as Matt to those who loved him, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, in Denver, surrounded by the warmth of his family. Born on March 19, 2009, in Denver, Matt’s vibrant spirit and infectious laughter left a mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Matt was a young man whose life was filled with simple joys and genuine connections. He worked as a cashier at Barry's Bingo and took a brief stint at Journey's, where, true to his playful nature, he enjoyed the employee discount on shoes. Beyond work, Matt was a spirited soul with a love for reading, especially comic books.
His school years were marked by both creativity and sportsmanship. He attended Collegeview Elementary School before moving on to Westminster High School, where he thrived as a member of the band, skillfully playing the saxophone, and also displayed determination and teamwork on the baseball field, where he played first base. Matt’s love for baseball extended into his free time, where he found joy both in playing the game and watching others play.
Those closest to Matt hold dear memories of the ordinary yet precious moments spent together: taking night drives with his mom while listening to music, and peaceful fishing outings alongside his dad. These were the moments that revealed the depth of his gentle heart and the laughter he carried within him. A true jokester, Matt had a unique talent for making people laugh, often with his delightfully inappropriate jokes that brought lightness even during challenging times.
His passions stretched beyond family and school; Matt enjoyed the thrill of opening Pokémon cards, a hobby shared joyfully with his cousin. He also loved to spend time with and take pictures of his little brothers. He loved shopping, baseball, and the playful camaraderie that came with each activity, finding happiness, like most teens, through everyday experiences.
Matt is survived by his devoted parents, Desiree Gutierrez and Roberto Torres; his brothers, Ivan and Isaac; and his cherished grandparents, Jesus and Emma Flores. He was also deeply loved by his aunts Angelica Flores, Maria Chambers, and Christina Torres; his uncles Jesse Galvan, Jesus Flores, David Reyes, David Torres, and Troy Chambers; and several cousins including Briana, Joseph, Michael, Jalyssa, Joshua, Emma, and Anna. They, along with countless friends, will carry forward his memory and keep his spirit alive. Matt’s grandmother, Genal Hurtado, preceded him in death.
A visitation to honor Matthew's memory will be held on May 19, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Newcomer Funeral Home, West Metro, located at 901 S Sheridan Blvd, Denver, CO 80226. Following this, a Celebration of Life will continue at the same location from 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM, a time for family and friends to share stories, laughter, and tears. Later that evening, from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM, an additional gathering is planned at the VFW Post, 2680 West Hampden Avenue, Englewood, CO 80110, where reflections on Matt’s remarkable life will be shared in heartfelt companionship.
Though Matt’s time with us was far too brief, the light he brought into our lives will forever shine bright. He taught us the beauty of finding joy in small moments and the profound impact of laughter and love. Matthew Roberto Torres may have left this world, but in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who knew him, his spirit remains a treasured gift—gentle, bright, and, above all, deeply missed.
