Elisabeth Carol Maurita Hempstead was born in Decatur, Illinois on August 7, 1942. She was the Sixth child of Julia Ward Moore and Wesley E. Moore.
At a very early age she gave her life to Christ. She attended the public schools in Decatur and graduated from Eisenhower High School. She also attended Metro State College of Denver, Colorado. She had a great appreciation for music. At the age of 3 began to play the piano by ear and continued playing up to her passing. During her High School years she played the viola for the school orchestra and sang first soprano with the Glee Club.
In 1960 she married Barnell Hempstead. To this union were born two children. She later had two more children.
She was employed by Denver Social Services for 32 years. During her employment she administered the Food Stamp Program and retired as the Director of L.E.A.P. in 2000.
Maurita departed this life on October 15, 2011. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her beloved son Jon-david Hempstead and two sisters, Sharon Moore and Mary J. Winfield.
She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters Elisabeth Morris, Lyndly Hempstead of Denver, Christel (Chevon) Jackson of Atlanta, GA; three brothers David (Penny) Moore, Emery Moore of SLC, Utah and John (Genile) Moore of Denver; six sisters, Robertha Willingham, Leola Elite, Grace Moore and Jeanette Moore of Denver, Cecilia (Len) Canty of Oakland, CA, and Diane (Woody) Lovell of SLC, Utah; six grandchildren Jon Billingsley and Ashley Billingsley of Denver, Sara Morris of Las Cruces, NM, Emily Jackson, Amanda Jackson and David Jackson of Atlanta, GA; three great grandchildren Taeja Billingsley, Aunjolie Billingsley and Jaxon Billingsley all of Denver.
