Maye Simmons was born in Overton, Texas on March 23rd, 1929, to Magdalene and James Edwards. Maye went to live with Sebron and Gertrude Clay when she was three years old to ease the financial burden on the family. She saw her biological mother often. Magdalene cared for Maye’s eight siblings in Overton, Texas. Maye attended Kilgore Colored high school, where she states, “We learned more about Civil Rights and Black History” than the assigned curriculum of the White Public-School System. She was a proud member of the National Council of Negro Women and Debonairs.
Maye began her journey with God at Parish Chapel in Longview, Texas. This relationship developed through her attendance and participation in the choir at the people’s Presbyterian, and New Hope Baptist. The last church she attended, for 25 years, was True Light Baptist Church, where she is still a member.
Maye Simmons moved to Denver, Colorado with her cousin Annie Meryl Walker. She attended Emily Griffith Opportunity School where she earned her CNA. She earned an LPN while working at General Rose Hospital. Maye worked for Denver Health for thirty years on he switchboard and later managed the department. Denver, Colorado was the most important because she met the love of her life, Thomas Lee Simmons. They were married and best friends for 54 years. She later followed Thomas, who was the musical director, to the various churches he was led to serve.
Maye leaves one son, Paul Simmons, three daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie (Carlton Wynn), Desiree (Dale Buehner) and Sebronette (Vaughnn Jordan). She leaves one granddaughter, Nyah Jordan, as well as her only living beloved brother and sister-in-law, Horace and Brenda Stoker. A host of nieces, nephews and many friends.
Maye was reserved in public, but had a stellar, cynical sense of humor among family and friends. Maye raised her children well, preparing each for their Christian walk. She was an excellent cook who prepared dishes from around the world before it became trendy. Maye loved to dance and have a good laugh with her family and friends.
Maye Simmons died March 31, 2026 after a long battle with multiple strokes and heart problems. She lived a long life of 97 years and she will be missed greatly.
A few things Mom always said:
“You are doing well if you have two true friends in a lifetime.”
“Don’t waste your time cleaning.”
“Never forget where you came from.”
“If you dig one hole, dig two.”
“I ain’t sayin’ nothin’”
“Stay close to each other.”
