Melvin Eugene Wheeler Jr., of Aurora, Colorado, formerly of Elk City, Kansas, passed away Friday April 24, 2015 surrounded by his family, at the age of 81.
Melvin was born to Melvin and Viola Wheeler on July 17, 1933 in Portland, Kansas.
He was one of eight children raised on the farm we all grew to have a love for. He attended Elk City High School and was trained as a secretary. He retired in 1994 as the Division Manager of Texaco Trading and Transportation, Inc. He loved his work and was often lovingly deemed a "workaholic". We were all proud of his accomplishments.
Through his work he was afforded to travel and got to see much of our great country this way. The rest he explored via motorhome with his wife, Sandy, who shared his love of exploring the states and visiting with family.
Melvin is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Sandra Joy Wheeler, his six children; Steve Wheeler, Beverly Barnhart, Tammy Smiley, Karl Wheeler, Doug Wheeler and Vickie Wheeler – his 8 grandchildren; Chad Wheeler, Greg Barnhart, Sheila Barnard, Katrina Whillock, John Dawkins, Chris Smiley, Anneliese Walsh and Sierra Walsh – his 8 great grandchildren - his sisters; Mary Katherine and Glenda - and brother Robert "Uncle Bobby" Wheeler. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings Bonnie, Frank, Mona, and Dorothy Jean.
At Melvin's request, no services are being held. At the hands of his children a celebratory Barbecue will occur at his home in Aurora for his family to celebrate as he loved to live – eating, arguing and enjoying being with family. We might even argue politics, so he can have one last laugh.
