He is survived by loving wife Carol Smith; son Gary Smith; daughters Marsha (Dan) Herald and Dawn (Tom) Salaver; grandchildren Jeffrey (Lisa) Smith, Dasha (Jonathan) Carper, Jennifer (John) Clymer, Brenda (Michael) Kostelecky Hansen, Joshua (Megan) Herald, Jason (Johanna) Smith, Melissa Kostelecky and Bryan Cantor; great-grandchildren Isaiah, Connor, Ella, Jude, Joshua, Josiah, Jonah, Joel, Kaitlyn, Paige, Sean and brother Ralph Smith Jr. Merlin proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy.
