Michael James "Mike" Shaft, born on November 24, 1955, in San Luis Obispo, California, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, in Bailey, Colorado, surrounded by the comforts of his own home. Known for his deep and caring nature beneath a resilient exterior, Mike made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mike’s journey in life was marked by his varied talents and passions. Though he cherished the beaches of California, a fateful visit through Colorado led him to make it his home, where he truly found his place. Professionally, he dedicated a part of his career as a supervisor for Jo-Berly's Domino’s Pizza franchise in the Denver metro area. Beyond this, he also channeled his craftsmanship and creativity into entrepreneurship, owning a cabin refinishing business known as Boardwalk Wood. His artistic spirit flourished through Aspen Spirit, a unique venture where he transformed Aspen branches into art and furniture pieces. This creative outlet reflected his love of natural materials and his remarkable skill. In one of his final wishes, Mike asked his friends to each select a piece from Aspen Spirit, ensuring that a part of him would always remain with those he cared about.
Mike’s love extended beyond his work. He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast, especially cherishing rides on his Harley with his beloved wife, Dale Ann. Together, they sought out the exhilaration of events like the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and numerous other gatherings, sharing adventures on the open road. Mike’s dedication to craftsmanship was also evident in their home where he created a tranquil outdoor sanctuary. He painstakingly set river rocks to form pathways throughout their property, often placing heart-shaped stones for Dale Ann—an enduring symbol of his affection that spoke silently but profoundly.
His personal relationships were rich and meaningful. Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Dale Ann, a loss deeply felt by all who knew them. However, he is survived by treasured friends who stood by him, including Barbara and Jack Jones, as well as Jim Vonderwahl and Phil Longo, who lovingly helped care for him in his later years.
Mike's impact will be remembered not only in the hearts of his surviving friends but also in the art, craftsmanship, and memories he created throughout his life. With profound respect, we honor Mike—a man whose life was as enduring as the natural materials he so lovingly shaped.
