Paul J. Lucero “Mitch” died peacefully and joined the Lord in Heaven on May 31, 2026, in Lakewood, Colorado, at the age of 90.
Paul is survived by his wife Evangeline Ruth Lucero; children Paul Lucio Lucero (Natalie), Michael Louis Lucero (Rita), Lawrence James Lucero (Lynn); Grandchildren: Paul Lucio Lucero (deceased), Michael J. Lucero (Natalia), Elicia Vigil (Selena), Lisa Lucero, Vanessa Lucero and Eric Lucero: great grandchildren: Arianna Lucero, Michael L. Lucero, Seraphina Lucero, Selena Lucero (deceased), Angel Johnson, Serenity Herrera and Santino Casillas.
The fifth of six sons born to Lucio and Teresa Lucero, Paul was born on August 19, 1935, in Brighton, Colorado, and was raised in The Bottoms of Denver’s Lower Westside. Paul is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Fred, Samuel, Frank Richard and George.
Paul attended Lake Jr. High and Denver West High School. Paul proudly served in the United States Army, 101st Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky from 1954 - 1958. As a paratrooper, Paul completed approximately 35 jumps, which includes the 1958 Fort Campbell Tragedy in which Paul survived among the “walking wounded.”
After the military, Paul returned to Denver, Colorado, where he married Ruth Mondragon, March 1959. Paul was called “Bob” by his family and later called “Mitch” by friends who thought he resembled a movie character.
A proud Union Worker and a Class A Trucker, Paul worked the majority of his 36-year career at Consolidated Freightways. At the time of his retirement, in about 1992, he had earned his position as Number One in seniority — which he was very proud of.
Paul’s family remembers him as strong, kind, loving, giving and stubborn husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
Paul was a die-hard Denver Broncos fan, but his most loved hobby was working on antique trucks. He was very proud of his 1953 Chevrolet Pickup truck which he worked on in his garage before and during his retirement. He also loved his 1956 Chevy, and antique toys and cars which he had collected over the years.
Paul’s Visitation (9:30 am) and Memorial Service (10:30 am) will take place June 15, 2026, at Newcomer Mortuary, 901 South Sheridan Blvd. Lakewood, Colorado, with interment at Fort Logan at 12:30 pm. Reception to follow the internment.
The family is grateful to Villa Manor Care Center and Elevation Hospice staff for the care they provided for Paul during his final months and for the special care in his last days.
