Randall B. Lee

October 30, 1946 — April 8, 2026

Listen to Obituary

Randall Bruce (Randy) Lee, 79, passed on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, after a year-long battle with poor health, including pancreatic and prostate cancer.

Randy was born in Berwyn, Illinois, on October 30, 1946, to the late Oswen Lee and Kathryn Lee Pessa. Most of his early years were spent in Illinois, and then the family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1963. He finished high school and spent one year attending University of Georgia, studying engineering.

He visited Colorado in 1965, and immediately fell in love with the beauty of the state, and made the commitment to relocate, which he did the following year, 1966. His love of the mountains remained in his blood for the rest of his life.

He was a proud Vietnam veteran, serving as Assistant Chaplain (and occasional Medic) for the 22nd Surgical MUST (now know as MASH) Unit in Phu Bai, Vietnam, from 1967 to 1968. His love of this country and his patriotism knew no bounds.

Following his Army tour of duty, Randy, at the age of 29, became the youngest Executive Director of a medical society in the US, serving for several years as director of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. He then worked as an executive editor for Weisner Publishing focusing on model railroading, which was his passion as a railroad modeling hobbyist. In 1996, Randy turned that hobby into his final vocation as president of Highlands Station, Inc., which published Model Railroading magazine.

Randy was a dedicated member of the Denver HO Model Railroad Club since 1975. He had a very rich history with the club and the railroading world. He served as the President of the club for several years. He also authored many books and articles on model railroading, and can be considered one of the most foremost authorities on railroads in the US.

Randy also was somewhat of a walking encyclopedia, and when asking him a question that required a simple yes or no answer, you would find yourself glazing over after his long, complicated answer. Even then, he would just smile, and continue on.

Randy is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter Christy (Dave); son Rhett (Lynne); granddaughter Gretchen (Jared), stepsons John (Susan), Paul (Tanya), and Jeff; step-granddaughters Jaime (Stephen) and Sophia; sisters Carol (Art) and Coral; three nieces and a nephew. He is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Genevieve, who he joins in heaven.

A private interment will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 901 S. Sheridan, Lakewood, CO. We welcome guests to share a special moment or memory they have of Randy.
