Ret. Msgt. Gary Lyle Wallace was born in Van, West Virginia on September 23, 1938 to Delmar and Geneva Wallace. He married Edith V. Smart on July 31, 1959 and they remained married for almost 54 years. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lu Pearce; daughters, Jeanneene and LuAnn Wallace; son Gary David Wallace; and a granddaughter Golden Ben-Joseph.
Gary is also survived by his sisters Elizabeth Johnson and Marilyn (Jerry) Sexton; nieces Olivia (Mike) Bryant and Ann Marie Johnson. Also an uncle Charlie (Jerri) Brown. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Gary worked in the coal mines until he went into the US Air Force. He was stationed in Florida, England, Germany, Michigan, Colorado and Texas and did two tours in Vietnam. When the Air Force formed the Rangers he was in the first group to go to Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star and other medals.
While stationed in Michigan the security police formed a rifle and pistol team. In competition he was Aggregate with an M16 rifle. He also won other places in the competition. Gary's team came in 2nd place at the first world wide Rifle and Revolver competition. He retired after serving 20 years in the US Air Force.
He worked for the Denver Post then the United States Post Office as a mail carrier and transferred to Postal Security as a security police officer. He also received many letters of recognition for his service. He retired after 21 years.
He was a member of Van United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Elks Lodge #2438, the American Legion, The United States Postal Union, USAF Safeside Association, Northglenn #2438 bowling league and numerous other bowling leagues. He supported the POW, MIA, and North Metro Community Services.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
