Reverend Jean Hallauer (Morris) Steiner of Lakewood, Colorado passed away at the age of eighty-eight on May 11, 2013. She was born in St. Louis Missouri on April 24, 1925 to Roland Henry and Margaret Edmiston Hallauer and was raised during the Great Depression in Breckenridge, Texas. Reverend Steiner graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas with a Bachelor of Science degree (Chemistry) in 1945.
She was married through World War II, the Korean War and the remainder of 25 years to Joseph B. Morris, whom she met in college while they both were members of the debate team. They had five sons together and raised them at Park Hill United Methodist Church in the Hilltop/Crestmoor neighborhoods of Denver. During this period of time she was active in various groups including P.E.O, Turnstyle and the A D Pi Sorority at C.U. in Boulder. She was a lay worker and an Associate of Evangelism at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Scott United Methodist Church and Cameron United Methodist Churches. Reverend Steiner served on the Rocky Mountain Conference's Commission on Religion and Race and other conference offices. She was accepted in the Rocky Mountain Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1978 and obtained full membership in 1984. She graduated from Iliff School of Theology with a Masters of Divinity. Her church appointments commenced with Milford, Utah from 1977-1980 where she mirrored her great grandfather as a circuit rider conducting services in 3 separate towns many miles apart every Sunday at 9 AM, 12 Noon and 3 PM. At this time, she was the first woman in the conference on an ordination tract and the only active woman clergyman in Utah. Additional appointments were in Ordway, CO; Phillips United Methodist Church in Denver; Berkeley United Methodist Church in Denver; Valley Vista United Methodist Church in Denver before retiring after 2 years in Akron, CO (1987-1989).
One of Jean's passions was spending time with her sons, Paul, Tim and Drew Morris. She enjoyed "giving" all of the time, including numerous charities and she never wanted a visitor to leave empty handed. Giving is what she was all about. Reverend Steiner enjoyed traveling to the Holy Land (several trips); Europe; India and Mexico. When in India she taught young children English and voluntarily sent dozens of shoes back to the children there to fill a need. She forged a relationship with a missionary while in India and supported him for what is now nearly twenty years.
Reverend Steiner is survived by Paul R. Morris, Timothy R. Morris, Andrew "Drew" C. Morris, the late Joseph ("Jay") B. Morris, Jr. and the late James Morris. She is a grandmother to Jessica Morris Fryer, Lindsey Nicole Morris, Trent Joseph Morris and Kate McKenzie Morris. She is great-grandmother to Eli Morris Fryer and Ivy Marie Fryer. She is sister to Alice H. (Rolor) Ray, Mary H. (the late Rev. James E.) Barnes and the late Jane H. Jones. She is Aunt to James E. Barnes, Jr., Elizabeth A. Barnes, Wren E. Ray and Robin R. Jordan. Also survived by great nieces, nephew and other relatives.
