Rickie Alan Carrera

Rickie Alan Carrera, known affectionately as Rick, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026 in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, after an extended illness. On his last day, he was surrounded by his loving family—a fitting closing chapter for a life lived in connection, warmth, and dedication to those he treasured most.

Born on April 9, 1952, in Denver, Colorado, Rick's roots ran deep in the Centennial State. The son of Jessie and Shirley Carrera, who preceded him in death, Rick grew up with a zest for life, a mischievous sense of humor, and an ability to make friends wherever he went. These qualities stayed with him into adulthood.

Rick became a masterful carpenter, recognized not just for his talented hands, but for the care he poured into every project. Whether building pergolas, decks, fences, or crafting toys and chests as a woodworker, Rick always had a meticulous attention to detail. His craftsmanship can be found in homes across Florida and Colorado, reflecting his willingness to travel wherever his work was needed and the seasons called him. Family members still recall fondly the kitchen in their home, renovated with Rick’s trademark style.

But work for Rick was never simply about construction; it was about connection. He delighted in sharing updates and finished projects with his children, Bryan and Kimberly, involving them in his world and even bringing them to worksites.  He shared the intricacies of the construction business with his son Bryan, gifting him with the same tangible skills he had, and lifelong memories.

While his career stood as a testament to his talent, Rick’s true legacy lies in the relationships he built and nurtured. He is survived by his former spouse, Donna Carrera. Even after their divorce, Rick’s affection for Donna never wavered. Theirs was a rare bond marked by mutual respect, deep friendship, and an enduring connection that drew them together for Sunday visits and church services, even as his health declined. Donna’s caring presence was constant in Rick’s later years, and her devotion did not go unnoticed by his family and caregivers.

Rick's pride and joy were his children, Bryan and Kimberly. To them, he was a role model who taught by example—humble in his achievements, generous with his wisdom, and always ready with a joke. He was also a grandfather and is survived by grandchildren Kailey Rose Moya, Samarah Jane Benzel, and Aiden Wimberly.

His siblings, Martin, Ronald, and Gary Carrera, remember Rick as a brother who never missed an opportunity to share a laugh, host a family gathering, or talk sports. Those close to him will particularly miss the annual Fourth of July picnics at Platt Park—days spent throwing horseshoes, grilling, and savoring the warmth of family togetherness. His kids cherish the memory of their dad in the kitchen, making the most perfectly round tortillas and passing on his flour tortilla recipe—meals that became small celebrations of their heritage and his love for Mexican food.

Rick’s enthusiasm wasn't limited to family. He found friendship everywhere he went—at Home Depot, Target, or Wal-Mart, introducing his children to store greeters as proudly as he would to lifelong friends. His talkative nature and sharp humor brought smiles to all, even after his dementia diagnosis. Rick’s easy laughter and genuine interest in others made him unforgettable.

A lover of animals, Rick adored his English Bulldogs and took particular joy in sharing stories about them. His job at City Bark was less about work and more about being surrounded by the dogs he loved. 

Rick enjoyed fishing, camping, playing in softball leagues, and cheering—without fail—for his Colorado sports teams. The Broncos, Rockies, Avalanche, and Nuggets held his unwavering allegiance, no matter where he lived. And though he spent seasons in Florida, he remained ever a fan, proudly donning hats for his teams and adopting the Florida Gators as well.

Rick loved music and could name any classic rock song in an instant, often down to the album, especially Santana and the music of the 60s and 70s.

Rickie Alan Carrera will be remembered by the memories shared, and the lessons—practical and heartfelt—that shaped his family's lives.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 11, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Newcomer Funeral Home, West Metro, 901 S Sheridan Blvd, Denver, CO 80226. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM at the same location, with a reception beginning at 2:00 PM.
