Riley David Young, 17, of Strasburg, CO, died on Friday, October 2, 2015, as the result of an automobile accident in Greeley, Colorado.
Riley had just begun his senior year at Strasburg High School and was looking forward to playing his fourth year of basketball for the Indians. He was enrolled in the associate degree program with Fort Morgan Community College and planned to pursue a career in Medicine.
Riley was born May 31, 1998 in Suffolk, Virginia, just in time for his brother, Indiana's 2nd birthday. At various stages in his early life Riley has been passionate about playing soccer and Red Sox baseball with Alston Stallings, a lifelong friend, at Olive Branch Little League as well as belonging to the MLB Red Sox Nation. He was a fan of NASCAR racing, NFL football, ESPN and Xbox. He began playing basketball when he was 10 and his dedication to the game grew with each year he played. He was active in the Cub Scouts for five years and earned his Arrow of Light in 2008 when he became a Boy Scout. Always competitive, he was involved in Gifted and Talented programs beginning in the 2nd grade and continued through his Honors courses in high school. He was involved in Odyssey of the Mind and Knowledge Bowl while in Portsmouth Public Schools. He moved to Strasburg in 2009 to be close to his extended family. He enjoyed riding BMX freestyle and even made his own longboard in the 8th grade while a student at University Schools in Greeley. He returned to Strasburg for his high school education and was proud to be a Strasburg Indian, and a member of the Tribe.
Riley has joined his grandfather Doug Young, godfather Dave Curtis and good friends Jeff, Spencer, and Antonio. He leaves behind his parents, Lisa McKelvy, of Strasburg, and Jim Young, of Greeley; his brother, Indiana, a member of Strasburg Class of 2015. He is also survived by his grandparents, Linda Widick of Greeley, and Alyce and Ray McKelvy from Maryland and his great grandmother, Lucy McKelvy of New York; aunts and uncles Pat & Brandi Young, Amy McKelvy & Travis Babcock, Jen & Jim Gallo, Dan & Laura Young and Scott & Margaret McKelvy and his lifelong friends, his cousins; Jamie, AnneMarie, Jimi, Mat, Laureign & Skye, Nick, Katy, Khristian, Chloe-Isaac and Grayson. Other survivors include Michelle Stallings-Turner and family, Brycen Widgren and family, Nick Matzinger and family and Kaden Wokowsky as well as his girlfriend Reanna Schafer and her family. Riley touched many lives and will be missed by these and so many more.
