Robert C. Stambaugh, 93, formerly of Grand Junction passed away August 24, 2016. Husband of Verna L.(deceased). Father of Debryh Stineman, R, Merle (Chris) Stambaugh, Kevin (Janice) Stambaugh, and Brian Stambaugh (deceased). Grandfather of eight and great grandfather to several. Graveside Service September 6, 2016, 10:00 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado, Grand Jct.
Born to Lloyd William and Tilitha Helen Stambaugh on June 20, 1923 in Altoona, PA. The eldest of four siblings, Robert (Carl) grew up in Altoona and graduated from Altoona HS in 1941. At 19 he went to work for the PA Railroad as a machinist apprentice. In 1943 he was inducted into the Army. He served from 1943 until 1946. After a lay off from the RR, Carl moved to Chester, PA for a brief time. He hired on as a machinist at Martin Marietta in Baltimore, MD. Carl married Verna Slagle, of Altoona, in 1952. They made their home in Essex until 1960 when Martin Marietta transferred Carl to Denver, CO, Now a family of five, the Stambaughs made their home in Littleton, CO, where he and Verna raised Debryh, Merle, Kevin, and Brian. Owning mountain property in Bailey and Conifer, was the impetus to move the family to Deer Creek Canyon, CO in 1968. Carl continued to work and retired from Martin in 1985. In 1982, Carl and Verna moved back to Denver and then settled in Grand Jct.
First living in the Redlands, on South Broadway, and making many improvements, Carl and Verna decided that taking care of two acres was becoming a bit too much. The next move was to 30 Road north of Patterson. Then again, age making it difficult, and to be honest, making a little money, moved for the last time in Grand Junction to 30 Road and Orchard. Verna passed away in March 2009. Carl then moved back to Littleton and resided with his eldest son Merle and his wife Chris. Alzheimer's accelerated and Carl moved to Assisted Living until his passing.
Carl was an adventurer and outdoorsman. Moving from PA to Colorado inspired him to add to his hunting and fishing interests. The tales of the old west always sparked Carl's imagination. He, his sons, and whoever else would partake, ventured into the old ghost towns looking for mining memorabilia. After awhile Carl had quite a collection. He was also very ambitious always improving on every house he owned. Carl and good friend Woody Foltz, tore down a house in Riverside and moved another house from this same community to a place off of Roxborough Road. He belonged to the Petroleum and Mining Club and the Elks Club in Grand Jct.
Most of Carl's friends are deceased, his family was always very important to him. We all love him very much, and we will miss him as we do our mother, Verna.
