Robert "Bob" Droullard Sr., a long-time resident of Lakewood and Grand Junction, Colorado, passed away April 19, 2016 in Lakewood, Colorado. He was born on January 8, 1923, in Holyoke, Colorado, the son of Fred and Grace (Powell) Droullard.
Bob was raised with his two younger brothers Ken and Keith, in Nebraska, Oregon, California and Washington. His sister, Virginia, died as an infant in 1929. As a young man of 19, Bob went to work for the Boeing Company in Washington before he was drafted by the Army in 1943. During World War II, he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Camp Kohler, California and Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He arrived by naval ship on the island of Okinawa one month after fighting had ended on the island. After the war, Bob attended Fresno State College where he obtained a degree in geology. He went on to do graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1950, Bob went to work for the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado as a geophysicist. It was there that he met Eileen DeVorss, and they married on September 10, 1951. In 1971, Bob began working for the United States Bureau of Mines in Lakewood, Colorado where he did extensive research on radon levels in uranium mines. He was a co-inventor of a method of continuously determining radiation working level exposure, for which he received a Patent in 1980. He received an award for Meritorious Service from the United States Secretary of the Interior when he retired in 1984.
Bob had many hobbies during his life, including gardening and photography. As a Ham radio operator, he received a WAC (worked all continents) certificate in 1958 with the call letters WØCNM. After his retirement, Bob developed a passion for genealogy, spending many years researching the Droullard family history. His prolific research produced a family tree with over 10,000 names.
Bob is survived by his five children, Robert F. (Janet) Droullard Jr., Marilyn L. (Gregg) Reineke, Ann M. Smith, David D. Droullard, Janet K. (Dave) Hill; eight grandchildren, Brian, Lisa, Nate, Sarah, Joshua, Rachel, Brendan and Katie; nine great grandchildren; brother, Emerson Keith (Lily) Droullard; sister-in-law, Marjorie Droullard; nieces, Rebecca Droullard, Andrea Austin; nephews, Daniel Droullard, Brent Droullard, Mark DeVorss, Scott DeVorss. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eileen M. Droullard, brother, Kenneth Droullard, sister-in-law Eileen L. Droullard, sister, Virginia Droullard.
