On May 21, 1930 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, Russell Eugene Birmingham, was born to Tom and Ethel Birmingham. He was the oldest of two sons, younger brother, Roy Milton having preceded him in death.
Being a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Russell matriculated through the Tulsa School District attending Booker T. Washington Elementary School, Carver Middle School, and graduating in 1949 from Booker T. Washington High School.
During his school years, he was quite the athlete; excelling in swimming, basketball and baseball.
Not only known for his athletic prowess, he had great interest in the subject of geography and a profound intellect for mathematics. With these two subject matters being a serious factor of his studies, it's no surprise that they contributed in the future making of him becoming an entrepreneur.
Having earlier loved and played the trumpet and even making a recording – to say he was a lover of music; particularly a jazz enthusiast would be putting it mildly. Russell was a connoisseur in the history of jazz which included the music, the era, and the musicians. He knew dates, discography, and detailed background of musicians. From the avant garde Thelonious Monk, to standard jazz vocalists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Russell had an extensive jazz collection. From Bebop to fusion, Russell knew it and had it all, and his love for the music has had a lifelong affect upon his children.
Russell was known to be a hard worker all of his life – formulating a standard of excellence and self-discipline for himself and all he mentored.
He worked tirelessly for Red Top Janitorial Services and his energy and work ethic soon caught the attention of management who would use his abilities to represent the company as a consultant and technical advisor; creating new ideas and solving business dilemmas. He worked for Red Top for 35 years.
With friend Wallace Leary, Russell created Birmingham, Inc., a business of his own.
During his working years he tried to help all young men and women he came in contact with. He received respect from them and was given respect in return. He worked until he was past 70 years of age.
On August 7, 1967 Russell married Ruby G. Birmingham, the love of his life. To this union, which already included two beautiful children, son Jay and daughter, Shawna, was born Jonathan.
Russell worked hard to be the best husband and Father he could be. He was a great provider for his family; always aiming to keep them healthy and happy.
He kept God first in his life and prayed each morning and night. He prayed for his wife, children, and grandchildren.
He was in love with his wife Ruby and after God, put her first above any and all. Their marriage was an example to be emulated by all who hope to succeed the in the covenant of matrimony.
To keep his legacy alive, he leaves: his wife and long life companion, Ruby G. Birmingham; sons Jay, Jonathan (Leah), Chris, Milton Jr. (Russell Birmingham, Jr. preceded him in death); daughters Trecia (Los Angeles) and Shawna (Reggie); grandchildren: Britni, Blaire, Elecia (Los Angeles), Aaron (Los Angeles), Angela, Justin F., Justin A., Nigel, and Najji; niece Leah, and nephew Sam.
He also leaves a host of friends and acquaintances who will dearly miss his presence. For those who know Him, knows Russell, the hope of reunion "in the morning" is assured.
The Battle is Won
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
I followed the path life laid for me.
I took his hand when I heard his call,
I took my master's hand and left it all.
It wasn't for me to stay another day
No time to laugh, to love, to work or play.
Things left undone must stay that way
I have found peace on this glorious day.
If my parting has left a void,
Please fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah yes, these things I too will miss.
Be not burdened with time of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life has been full, I savored much-
Great family, good friends, fun times
And a love ones touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undo grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me
Make no mistake, I have been set free.
Goodnight,
Russell Eugene Birmingham
