Samuel Robert Maxwell, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and community member, departed this world on 06/24/2026, while at home with family. He lived a life of hard work, service, and support to those who surrounded him. He built community within the Maxwell family, near and far.
He was born on 11/01/1949 in Cheboygan, Michigan, to Melvin and Gertrude Maxwell, where he lived with his family until entering college at Central Michigan University. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Speech Pathology in 1971 followed by his Master’s in Special Education from Western Michigan University in 1975.
Sam married Patricia McGowan on July 29, 1973, and they were married for 52 years. They relocated to Colorado in 1977, raising their family and supporting their children and grandchildren through various endeavors. Sam valued providing for his family and passing on a legacy of love, strength, responsibility, and protection.
Sam also served his community through his work at BOCES from 1977-1982, Arkansas Valley Community Center Board from 1982-1998, and Community Housing Services in Denver from 1999-2013.
Sam then retired, spending time trip planning, traveling, and being a superfan of his grandchildren.
Sam is survived by his wife as well as their four children, Burke (Tara) Maxwell, Sarah (Lonny) Gallegos, Meghan (Alex) Thatch, Amanda (Matt) Encinias; ten grandchildren Katie, Tommy and Brennan Maxwell; Gavin and Bryson Gallegos; Ayanna and Elijah Thatch; and Naomi, Nathaniel and Paityn Encinias; and three great grandchildren Zyair, Aria, and Devin. Sam is also survived by his sisters Elaine Day, Jane Reynolds, and Rose Roberson, and many other family members who benefitted from his presence. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Maxwell.
Sam touched many lives, and the legacies and lessons that he offered will remain with us.
