The friend we know as Sandy Pool was born as Sandra Ruth Kusmac in Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 22, 1939. Sandy was the daughter of Andrew and Ethel Kusmac. After living in Minnesota the family moved to North Dakota, Oregon, and finally settled in Denver in 1955. Sandy graduated from West High School in Denver in 1957.
After graduation she started working for Ideal Cement Company in downtown Denver as a secretary, and worked her way up as Executive Secretary to the Vice President of the Financial Department. Sandy retired from Ideal Cement after 30 years.
During her years at Ideal, she was a volunteer for Junior Achievement helping teens around the Denver metro area. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) and served as President in 1973. Sandy was a member of Executive Women's International, and was a volunteer for the Denver Historical Society.
After retiring from Ideal Cement, Sandy worked part time at the 9 Health Fair, supported by KUSA-TV, Channel 9 in Denver. In 1980 she began volunteering for The Denver Museum of Nature and Science. In 2000, she received their 20 Years of Volunteer Service Award.
Sandy met Bill Pool in a bowling league, first as a substitute, than as a regular on Bill's bowling team in 1961. They were married the next year on July 14, 1962. Together, they belonged to an archery club for about 8 years. The team played against the men's' Air Academy Team.
In 1980 Sandy and Bill took up golf. Under the guidance of Jim and Marcia Bailey, the Pools traveled across the country from the east coast to Hawaii playing many different golf courses.
Sandy later became a Board Member for the Air Force Academy Quarterback Club of Denver and could be found tailgating and attending Air Force football games.
In 1993 Sandy became the President of Village East Meats, Inc. the family business operated by both Sandy and Bill.
Sandy enjoyed travel to Europe, Bermuda, and the Caribbean but the island of Kauai was her favorite. Reading was one of her greatest passions.
Among Sandy's surviving relatives are her sister, Andrean (& Bill) Andrus of Centennial, sister-in-law Irene Hansen of Aurora; nieces, Patty Haines of Morrison, Nancy (& Manuel) Gunn of Indiana, and Linda Haines of Indiana; nephews, Maxwell Andrus of Centennial, Ron (& Denise) Haines of Belleview, CO, Mark Hansen of Aurora, Mike (& Carmen) Kusmac of New Mexico, Paul (& Linda) Kusmac of Minnesota; cousins, Peg (& Dalton) Anderson of Minnesota, Annie (& Chris) Sharp of Texas, Paula (& Mike) Monroe of California; and six Great nephews and nieces. Sandy also survived brother-in-law, Carson Haines (2008) and sister-in-law, Betty Haines (1999).
