Shirley Hammes

September 3, 1940 — December 13, 2024

Shirley Hammes passed away in Aurora, Colorado on December 13, 2024, surrounded by her family.

Growing up with siblings Alberta and Virgil, both of whom preceded her in death, Shirley developed a resilient spirit typical of her generation of Midwestern women.

A longtime F.W. Woolworth employee, her career afforded her numerous opportunities to travel. Shirley loved collecting souvenirs, mementoes and stories to share with friends and family. Following her retirement from Woolworth she worked at Pickens Technical College supporting staff and students in the Internship program. She was meticulous about sending birthday and holiday cards, never missing a friend or family member's birthday. She enjoyed family gatherings and holiday shopping.

Throughout her life, Shirley maintained an active interest in her community, regularly keeping tabs on neighborhood events and local goings-on. Her inquisitive nature meant she was always well-informed about the latest local news and happenings.

Shirley's life was not without profound grief. She and her husband Don, who preceded her in death by 20 years, faced the unimaginable loss of their first child in infancy—a pain that she carried with grace and quiet strength. Despite these challenges, she managed life on her own terms.

Shirley is survived by her nieces Tami Morrissey and Krista Koop; nephews Nicholas (Daphyne Ross) Younger, Adam (Frida Dzhavsarova) Younger; great-niece Brittany Morrissey, great-nephews Thomas (Celia) Morrissey, Emerson Younger, Michael Koop, Trevor Koop; sister-in-law Susan Younger; She is preceded in death by her husband Sylvester “Don” Hammes, daughter Debra Ann Hammes; sister Alberta Koop, brother Virgil Younger and parents Albert and Eileen Younger.

Services will be held Monday, January 20, 2025 at 10:00am.
