Sonny James Padilla

Sonny James Padilla, of Denver, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly in Denver on August 18, 2026, at the age of 48. He was born on August 14, 1978, in Denver, a city that remained his home throughout his life.

Sonny was a craftsman whose work reflected both skill and determination. He worked in various construction roles over the years and most recently worked as a welder. His commitment to bettering himself was evident in earning his GED later in life and becoming certified as a welder, accomplishments that spoke to his perseverance and quiet pride in what he could do with his hands.

He was known as someone who was always willing to help others, especially those in need. If there was a need, Sonny was often the first to step forward. Friends could count on him because he was dependable, and those who knew him will remember the contagious laugh that so naturally brightened a room. He also took pride in his appearance, carrying himself with care and self-respect.

Fishing was one of Sonny’s longtime joys, a hobby he had enjoyed since he was young. Some of the most cherished memories of him are found in the simple, loving rhythms of everyday life. His mother remembers the time they spent running errands together, with Sonny helping her take care of things so she would not have to do them alone. They also went to church together, and he especially enjoyed her home-cooked meals, with Mexican food holding a special place among his favorites.

Among the blessings of Sonny’s life, reconnecting with his daughters and getting to know them later in life was one of his proudest joys. He was grateful for the opportunity to build those relationships with them. He was also looking forward to knowing his grandchildren more deeply and embracing the role of grandpa, something that brought him happiness and hope.

Sonny is survived by his mother, Mary Ann Romero; his daughters, Jazell Sunderman, Layla Sunderman, and Savannah O’Brien; his sister, Jenny Romero; and his niece, Heather Escobedo. He was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Padilla, and by his sisters, Gina Padilla-Bernard and Tina Padilla.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a visitation on September 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Praise Center Church, 3105 W. Florida Ave., Denver, CO 80219. A funeral service will follow there from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A graveside service will then be held at Arvada Cemetery, 5581 Independence Street, Arvada, CO 80002, at 1:30 p.m.

Sonny will be remembered for his generous heart, his hardworking spirit, his laughter, and the care he gave so freely to the people around him. His memory will live on in the love of his family, in the friendships he earned through loyalty and kindness, and in the everyday acts of help and devotion that defined his life.
