Spencer Ardell Bullard, age 92, of Lakewood Colorado died May 23, 2014.
He was born April 17, 1922, in Thompson IA. He was the third born of nine children. Spencer attended school and worked with his other brothers and sisters on a farm in southern Illinois during economic hard times of the 1930's.
Spencer graduated from Flora, IL high school in 1940. He then briefly attended Southern Illinois University. He was drafted into the Army in November 1942, and served in the Army's 96th Infantry Division. He served in front line combat during the invasions of Okinawa and Letye at the height of the World War II in the Pacific. Spencer was awarded two bronze stars.
Spencer was discharged from the Army in December 1945 and returned to his home in Illinois and married Mary, who he had met before the war and corresponded with all during his time in the Army. Spencer and Mary were married in January 1946.
Spencer later attended the University of Illinois and earned both a Bachelor and Masters in Math and Science Education.
Spencer's civilian career included being a junior high school math and science teacher and a period of time being a civilian instructor for the Air Force. In 1956 he took a position in the aerospace industry and moved his family to Connersville, Indiana. In 1958 Spencer and his growing family moved again to Littleton, Colorado after accepting a job as an engineer with Martin Marietta Corporation. Spencer and his family later moved to Grand Junction, Colorado where he worked for Occidental Oil Company during the early 1980's. Spencer finished his career with the Minerals Management Service at the Denver Federal Center in 1987.
Spencer is survived by his wife Mary, and four children: Ken, Steve, Pat and Marilyn. Spencer is also survived by three grandchildren: Scott, Jeff, and Nicole; and two great grandchildren: Kaelyn and Shane
Spencer's many interests included photography, genealogy, participating with the Regis College Center for the Study of War Experience and spending time with family. He loved life, traveling, socializing with people and new experiences.
