Steve Nickerson passed away on June 8, 2013. A Celebration of Steve's Life & Times will be held privately, at a later date.
Steve was born on July 27, 1957 in Toledo, Ohio to Harry and Esther Ann Nickerson. He is survived by his wife, Karen, and step-children Alex and Kristin Kunzelman; brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Susan Nickerson, and their children Dylan and Connor; and sister Ginny Nickerson and her children Leland and Aaron Kirchmeier.
Steve was a talented photographer working in the newspaper venue. He received the Hasselblad Magic Eye Award in 1991 while working at the Detroit Free Press, a World Press Award in Fashion in 1997 while at the Rocky Mountain News, and was part of teams that won two Pulitzer Prizes for breaking news photography at the Rocky Mountain News in 2000 for coverage of the Columbine shootings and in 2003 for coverage of wild fires. He firmly believed that photographs were gifts from the subject to the photographer, and his goal was to be a voice for those that did not have one. He was kind, brutally honest, funny, creative, off-the -wall, outside the box, childlike, playful, interested in the world around him, and the best friend you could ever hope for. He was committed to his family - so much so that for 4 years he commuted from Detroit to Grand Junction, CO to share in activities, and for four years from Denver to Grand Junction - working full time and driving across the mountains to attend school events and be there on the weekends. He helped the family travel to Australia to get married, South Africa, India, Europe, Bali, and Japan. He goal was to get lost and find his way back.
After being diagnosed with Scleroderma and self-labeled a disabled housewife, he was free to devote his time reading to children at the Anchor Center for Blind Children, meeting friends for tea and cones, and creating his own unique frames to showcase the art work of others. His friend base was aged 3-95. He will be sorely missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Scleroderma Foundation at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland: giving.jhu.edu/scleroderma.
