LOEFFLER, STEVEN JOHN, of Thornton, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, after a hard-fought battle with colon cancer. He was 56 years old.
Steve was born in Denver, Colorado, on February 10, 1970, to John and Norma Loeffler. He was the youngest of three, following brother James and sister Karen. He grew up in Thornton, making lifelong friends on Nueva Vista Drive and in the surrounding neighborhood. Steve met his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Bretta, in 1987, and graduated from Thornton High School in 1988. He earned a degree in business administration from Metropolitan State University in May 1992 and married Bretta three months later, on August 1. Together they welcomed their first son, Kevin, in 1995 and their second son, Tyler, in 1997.
Steve raised his family in Thornton while working 13 years for Frito-Lay and 19 years for the Colorado Department of Transportation, where he was beloved by his coworkers and friends. He treasured watching his family grow with the addition of daughters-in-law Virginia in 2020 and Sara in 2023, and grandson Warren in 2023. Steve loved roller coasters and traveled the country with his family to find them, riding more than 200 in his lifetime.
Steve will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and for his quiet thoughtfulness, dry humor, and quirky playfulness. He was the kind of person you could always rely on and talk to. His incredible strength and courage shone through, especially in his final years battling cancer, which he approached with positivity and grace until the very end.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, John and Norma, and his sister, Karen. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Bretta; sons Kevin (Sara) and Tyler (Virginia); grandson Warren; brother James; niece Amber and nephew E.J.; and countless friends he cared for dearly.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, November 6, at 10 a.m. at Newcomer’s West Metro Chapel, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd., Lakewood. Light refreshments will follow, including Steve’s favorite: doughnuts. Steve will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Steve’s memory to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance (colorectalcancer.org).
