Thomas R. Overton "Tom" was born on May 8, 1918 in Denver, CO and passed away August 22, 2014. He was raised in Denver and attended Denver Public Schools, graduating from North High School. At age 18 he went to work for Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company starting at the bottom, literally, working on the underground crew digging ditches. He progressed through the craft ranks as cable splicer, installer, repairman, and combination man; working in Denver, Salt Lake City, Brush, and Fort Morgan. He was soon promoted to exchange manager in Fairplay. His employment was interrupted when drafted during World War II where he achieved the rank of Master Sargent while serving in four separate theaters.
Upon returning from military service, Tom became the exchange manager at the Denver Westwood telephone office. From there he proceeded to the corporate offices in labor relations. In 1950 he was promoted to District Manager in Greely Colorado. From there he accepted a transfer to Pueblo in 1953. While there he was the District Manager in three different divisions. In 1962 he was promoted to the New Mexico State Commercial Manager position and then on to several other management positions. He retired in 1981 after 44 years of service as the New Mexico General Manager of Network.
In 1986 he and his wife Margaret moved back to Denver to be near their children and grandchildren. They enjoyed many years of travel seeing many countries and learning about world cultures. Some of their favorite trips were "mystery trips" not knowing where they were going until they arrived at their destination.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Margaret; son Tom (Sheryl); daughter Helen Thompson (Jerry); grandchildren Tom (Stacy), Cari Follett (Dennis), Susan Jarrett (Justin), Kristin (Terri), Stacey Mitchell (Eric), and Scott Thompson (Maru); great grandchildren Shelby, Paige, Colton and Ashley Follett; Hailey and Maisey Jarrett; and Addison and Calen Mitchell.
His was a life well lived and will he be missed by family and friends for his words of wisdom, guidance, generosity, sense of humor, and love of life.
