Tjalda Leegstra Schiel, aged 87, passed away peacefully on April 19, 2026, in Englewood, Colorado. Born on January 9, 1939, in Amsterdam, Holland, she lived a life filled with resilience, humor, and a love for simple joys.
Tjalda spent her early years in Amsterdam before her family moved to Rye, New York in 1945. She built a career as a taxi cab driver, navigating the roads with skill and determination on the grave yard shift. Her work reflected her independent spirit and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Tjalda was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Anthony Schiel; her parents, Tjerk Hidde Leegstra and Hella Leegstra-Boereboom; her sister, Sjoerdje Richardson; and her brother, Ruurd Leegstra. She is survived by three half-sisters and her nephew Michael Richardson and his wife Nancy Richardson. Tjalda cherished these family connections deeply.
A woman of many interests, Tjalda found joy in reading books and listening to music. She had a fondness for Dutch cookies and enjoyed frequenting McCoy's restaurant. Her cat "Pickles" held a special place in her heart, providing companionship and comfort throughout the years. Those who knew Tjalda will remember her as a kind and funny lady whose warmth brightened the lives of those around her.
Tjalda’s faith was non-denominational, reflecting an open-hearted approach to spirituality that matched her inclusive nature.
