Wayne Robert Jones
A Celebration of an Incredible Life

Wayne Robert Jones was born February 9, 1923 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania to James Russell Jones and Ethel Patterson Jones. He was their only child. As the son of an educator, he was raised to value learning and this was undoubtedly the beginning of his lifelong zest for life. Wayne was known as "Bob" to his family, following a tradition of using middle names for males in the family. During his schooling, he was active in sports and followed his interests in history and math.

Wayne attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business in June 1943. He then served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Indiana and Texas. Wayne was involved in underwater detection technology during his service, was proud of playing basketball while in the Navy. He received his honorary discharge in June 1946.

Wayne enrolled in the University of Denver, where he completed his MBA degree in August of 1948, while working to support himself. Wayne returned to Pennsylvania, and then married Elizabeth "Betty" (Christ) Jones in Sanford, Florida on August 8, 1952. Shortly after the wedding, Wayne and Betty moved to Colorado, where their four children, Judy, Nancy, Bobby and Patty were born.

Wayne worked for the Denver Transit Authority, and later for the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse. His career employment was with Ryder Truck Systems, working up to be the national Director of Internal Audit. While working at Ryder, Wayne's job was moved from Denver to Miami, Florida, so the family relocated in October 1969. He retired from Ryder in 1986 and moved back to Colorado.

Throughout his adult life Wayne valued time with friends. He had a genuine interest in other people and an uncanny way of remembering the details that people shared.

Wayne had six grandchildren and he supported all of them with college tuition for their Bachelor's programs. When three of his grandchildren married, Wayne and Betty were there for the weddings and welcomed the "grand-in-laws" into the family. He had six great-grandchildren.

Wayne spent many years following sports and mentally collecting players' performance statistics from college through professional careers. His sports passion was the Oakland (formerly Philadelphia) Athletics from the time he was in high school. He followed several teams and multiple sports, usually as an avid fan.

Wayne and Betty traveled to many interesting countries across the world. They shared stories of their adventures to places in Eastern Europe, Australia and England. Other interests included poker games with friends, reading about American history and music and movies from the 1940's and 1950's.

Wayne was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be missed, but he will never be forgotten. And, we thank you for all that you enhanced in us while we shared time with you.
