William “Bill” Mason Short was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He left this world on November 26th, 2024, at age 76, after a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born to Leland and Virginia Short on February 26th, 1948, in Petersburg, VA. While living and working in Washington, D.C., he met his soon-to-be wife, Beverly, whom he married on October 3rd, 1981. Together, they had two children: Jacob and Sarah.
After a long career in the federal government, working first for the National Archives and later as a legal editor for the Law Revision Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives, Bill went back to school to get his Master’s in Teaching and began a second career as an English teacher, where he was beloved by both his students and his colleagues.
The simple pleasures in life brought great joy to Bill. He could usually be found going for daily walks in nature, reading a good book, writing a letter or a poem, snacking constantly, having a conversation about anything under the sun, or spending quality time with his family. Bill is survived by his wife, Bev; son, Jacob; daughter, Sarah; daughter-in-law, Emily; son-in-law, Joe; and three grandchildren: Mason, Lily, and Logan.
A private visitation for the immediate family will be held on December 5th, 2024. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Namaste Angels Foundation, which provides financial assistance to individuals facing serious or life-limiting illnesses in order to add comfort and dignity at end of life.
May You Always Walk in Sunshine
May you always walk in sunshine and God’s love around you flow, for the happiness you gave us, no one will ever know. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. A part of us went with you the day God called you home. A million times we needed you; a million times we’ve cried. If love could only have saved you, you never would have died. May you rest in peace.
