William K. Smith, known fondly as Bill, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, in Lakewood, Colorado, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 26, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio where his journey began.
Bill's professional life was marked by over thirty years of dedicated service to the United States Geological Survey. His work, which focused on studying landslides, earthquakes, and geologic hazards, reflected not only his expertise but also his passion for understanding the natural world. His educational accomplishments included a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, followed by both a master's degree and a PhD from the University of Arizona. His intelligence and thoughtful approach shaped his contributions to the field, earning him respect from colleagues and friends alike.
A kind and reserved man, Bill was known for his generosity and willingness to lend a helping hand. For over thirty years, he actively volunteered as a troop leader in the Boy Scouts, sharing his love for adventure and the outdoors with countless young minds. He was deeply invested in his community and valued the significance of giving freely of his time.
His adventurous spirit led him to enjoy camping trips and memorable road trips with his family. Creating unforgettable holidays and vacations with his loved ones were treasured times that brought happiness to the family. Bill had a love for genealogy and often delighted in exploring his family's history. He was also an avid stamp collector and found joy in restoring his 1967 Land Rover which won several awards.
A proud veteran, Bill served in the United States Army on active duty for two years and continued to serve in the reserves, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. His commitment to his country was another testament to his character and sense of duty.
Bill's proudest accomplishments included the 46 years he spent married to his beloved late wife, Leslie Smith, and the joy of raising their two sons, Evan and Neil (Ashley). He took great pride in the contributions he made to the Association of Engineering Geologists and generously volunteered his time for Channel 6 PBS station, reinforcing his commitment to public service and education.
He is survived by his sons, Evan and Neil, and his grandsons, Elliott and Connor, who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and passion for exploration. He is also survived by his brother Ed and several cousins. Bill joins his late wife, Leslie Smith, and his parents, Eugene and Lois Smith, in eternal rest.
