After returning from Japan, he joined Marilyn’s parents in their family hardware business. He continued working for Meyer Hardware as President and General Manager until he retired. He served as a board member of the Golden Chamber of Commerce for several years and also as President of the Chamber.
Harold and Marilyn raised four children; Steve (Karla), James, Katherine Utter (Tom) and Patricia VanHeesch (Ron).
He enjoyed camping, fishing, and was an avid Colorado Rockies fan. Upon retiring, he and Marilyn spent many winters in Arizona where they enjoyed golfing and their many friends and relatives there. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Arvada, Colorado.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Aldon and Milan Schaefer. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, 4 children (Steve, Jim, Katherine, Patricia), 10 grandchildren (Mark, Amy, Chris, Jeff, Bryan, Greg, Danielle, Sasha, Keith, Kevin) and 13 great-grandchildren (Haley, Anna, Jack, Lyla, Lacy, Ethan, Cooper, Emmy, Kenzie, Ryker, Bailey, Sterling, Daisy), and sister Ruth Ann Duran.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Harold’s name may be directed to Peace Lutheran Church Building Fund, Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation, Smile Train Children’s Cleft Charity, or Guatemala Medical Care Clinic (www.camotanclinic.com).
